October 25 – Change

Jeremiah 48:10-12Cursed is he who does the work of the Lord deceitfully, and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from blood. Moab has been at ease from his youth; he has settled on his dregs, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, nor has he gone into captivity. Therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent has not changed. ‘Therefore behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘That I shall send him wine-workers who will tip him over and empty his vessels and break the bottles.’”

Change is an inevitable part of our journey. We change from the beginning of life to the end. We will exit this earth different than we entered. The cells in our bodies are changing all the time. Nature itself changes. I’m looking out of my window right now and seeing the colors of autumn as the leaves produce beautiful hues of amber and red.

In today’s devotional Moab has not undergone change. This is because of three conditions. The first one is ease. When things are going relatively well, who wants to rock the boat? The second one is being emptied. Moab has not been “poured out.” Anything that remains “as is,” no matter how good it might have been at first, will end up putrid. The third one is Moab had not gone into captivity. In other words, Moab hadn’t experienced adversity. That will make you change probably quicker than anything else.

Now, let me be the first to say that I prize stability. But stability doesn’t necessarily equal non-movement. We can be people who are planted yet people who embrace change. Because initiating change on our own can be difficult, God says in verse 12 that He is going to send external forces to create the change.

The Christian life is all about change and transformation. I sense a real change coming to some of you. Are you at unease with your ease? What external factors are pressing upon you to make change? Could it be that God is allowing some “pressure” to create movement in your life? Embrace the change. The season is shifting outside.
