October 11 – Marred Clay

Jeremiah 18:1-4The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying: ‘Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear My words.’ Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something at the wheel. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make.”

The message that God has for us may be at a specific place and not where we are presently. The revelation of God’s word to us is dependent upon our obedience and being in the right position. God did not deliver His message to Jeremiah until Jeremiah moved into the place God had for him. This is not an isolated event. Several times in Jeremiah God asks him to go somewhere and then he will receive the message God has for him. Are you in the place where you can receive God’s message?

We are all marred clay. Like it or not, none of us was born perfect. Sin has a way of gouging us and leaving scars and imprints. But the marvel of this passage is the ability of God (the Potter) to make us again into another vessel. And isn’t this the wonder of the gospel? God transforms us so that we become a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). What we once were we are not now. But we must trust Him. He makes us into the vessel that seems good to Him. After all, we are created for His purpose and pleasure.

Put yourself into the hands of the Potter. He is able to smooth out the imperfections and recreate you into a completely different vessel. Be patient. It’s a process. But the outcome is unbelievable!
