May 9th – Better Than I Deserve

Psalm 106:13-15 – They soon forgot His works; They did not wait for His counsel, But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tested God in the desert. And He gave them their request, But sent leanness into their soul.

These verses highlight some of the difficulty Israel had in the wilderness. Their present craving caused them to forget God’s past dealing with them and the revealing of His power in their lives. It is so important to not forget what God has done in your life. How many times have I heard people complaining when I know God has been so good to them? If you are going through a difficult time right now, resist the temptation to complain about it. If God did not do another thing for you, He has already been better to you than you deserve. Why not take a few moments today and reflect on the goodness of God? Think back on the times when He has answered your prayer or when He was faithful to you when you were not faithful to Him. And then give Him thanks.

Verse 15 is an interesting verse. It lets us know that God answered their prayer although the result was less than desirable. It leads me to think that there may be times in our lives when answered prayer with difficulty may be an indication we are not in the will of God. I’m not saying that’s the case all the time. But if we have been persistent in our praying because we did not see God answer our prayer for what we desired… and then God answered it but it turned out a lot different than we thought it would, it could be that we asked for something we were not supposed to get. It certainly deserves some thought on our part and most definitely requires us to pray very carefully and by all means, pray according to the will of God and not so much according to our own desires.
