May 31 – The Eternal Word

Psalm 119:130,131 – The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple. I opened my mouth and panted, For I longed for Your commandments.”

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is a tribute to the word of God. It contains 176 verses and highlights the value of God’s word and our obedience to it.

Verse 130 above gives us a key to making sure we receive the value of scripture personally. It has to enter us. When it does, it will bring light. This is why it is so important for you and I to esteem scripture reading regularly, just as you are doing today. I want to encourage you not to read it causally but rather prayerfully. You will gain so much more from the Bible reading if you pray beforehand. The reason is because it is a spiritual book and is meant to be grasped by the spirit. Prayer puts you in a position to understand what you are reading, hence the rest of verse 130 – “…it gives understanding to the simple.”

Verse 131 has to do with having a passion for scripture. Again, Bible reading should not be approached causally or because it’s a “good idea.” Our spiritual hunger will play a key role in possessing the eternal truths locked away in it’s pages. Let it “enter” you today and you will become filled with its light and knowledge.
