John 8:31,32,36,37 – “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free…36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.”
What do you think of when you think of the word “free?” I think of a state of not being trapped, enslaved, and bound. I think of a release of limitations. I think of inner peace and calm.
Jesus promises His followers freedom. This can be attained by becoming a disciple, a learner and pupil, of Jesus Christ. To be a disciple we must “abide” in His word. Our relationship to the word of God is key to our discipleship and freedom. To abide means to stay, remain , and live. It is a constant meditation and soaking in the Word of God. The result will be knowing the truth, and it is this knowledge of the truth that has releasing power to it.
Jesus’ statement to the Jews in verse 37 is key: “…My word has no place in you.” The word “place” means space, to pass through, to hold. When Christ spoke to them they did not contain it. They simply let His eternal words pass through them. They were so filled with other thoughts and opinions that there was no place for God’s word in them. Dear friend, make sure there is space in you for God’s word. If you do, there’s a good chance that you will live a life that’s free.
