June 22 – Spiritual Medicine

Proverbs 17:22 – A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones.”

Psychosomatic illness is a physical condition which is impacted by emotional stress and psychological conflict. It simply means that what’s going on in your heart and mind can affect you physically. This works on both ends of the spectrum. You can either be healthy or sick because of positive or negative thoughts and emotions.

Our text is a perfect example of the mind/body connection. Let’s start with the negative: “a broken spirit dries the bones.” The word “broken” means smitten, afflicted or wounded. When you leave  issues unresolved and live with wounds that are not healed, you will compromise your health. It is so important that you find healing for your heart and your emotions. Let God’s word saturate you, exercise forgiveness and allow God’s love to pour over you. It is very possible that you will see improvement in your health.

Now for the positive: “A merry heart does good, like medicine…” The word “medicine” means cure. Do everything in your power to infuse your heart with joy (the meaning of “merry”). How can you do that? The highest dose of joy you will ever receive is in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 16:11). Therefore, if you are broken and depressed, you need to be intentional over a specific period of time (60 to 90 days) to do everything to turn your health around. Here are some ideas:

Get rid of junk food and start eating healthy. There is a direct correlation between diet and mental health

Eliminate all negative input in your life. Turn off the news and social media that attacks your joy.

Disconnect yourself from negative people.

Develop a daily habit of prayer. Remember Psalm 16:11 above

Fill your mind with good thoughts.

Watch good, clean, funny movies and programming.

Begin to take walks in parks or other environments that are rejuvenating.

If you will commit yourself to these principles I believe you will see your health improve. Not just physically, but spiritually, and emotionally too.
