Matthew 24:12 – “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”
This chapter (Matthew 24) is full of end-time instructions to the disciples by Jesus. He was sitting on the Mount of Olives and they came to Him and were curious about the timing three things:
The destruction of the temple.
The sign of His coming.
The end of the age.
The first thing Jesus tells them is, “Be careful that no one leads you astray.” This phrase is used at least two more times in this chapter. Deception will be a major indicator of end-time events. Why is that? Because false teachers, false prophets, false, false, false will be everywhere and in verse 24 Jesus says that even the “chosen ones” are in danger of being deceived.
For those of you who are into eschatology it’s a great read about what will happen in the future. But don’t miss the warnings Jesus gives throughout the chapter and especially in our text. Lawbreakers and wickedness will be ever increasing and because of it love will begin to erode in people’s hearts. I hate to see what a culture looks like when lawlessness takes over and love is scarce. The human heart is a cold place when love is absent. The Lord said in Jeremiah 17:9 – “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?”
So guard your heart and keep it warm by the fires of the Holy Spirit and the embers of God’s word. Don’t let what’s going on outside in this world choke the love burning on the inside. Keep loving no matter what.
