August 28 – The Hidden Things

Job 28:1,2 –Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is
refined. 2 Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore.”

I would encourage you to read past the two verses I have highlighted today and glean from the words of Job. The first eleven verses of chapter 28 accentuate the fact that the treasures of the earth are not found on its surface. Sapphire and gold are hidden beneath the rock.

And so it is with us. Our real value lies deep within. There is a saying in Western culture as it relates to someone who doesn’t have much substance beneath the surface of their lives. We call that person “shallow.” If you want to get to the real nuggets you have to dig deeper into a person’s soul. It is there you will find out who the person really is, which hopefully will lead to another saying in the West, “There is more to them than meets the eye.”

Verse 5 says, “As for the earth, from it comes bread, but underneath it is turned up as by fire.” Underneath, where man cannot see, is where the fire heats up and God’s work is done. It is there the man of God, the woman of God, is formed. It is there that God’s work of righteousness and holiness is impressed. If you ever see a person used by God know that they have had some excavation done in the depths. Do not be lured to live a surface life. Focus on the hidden things – those are the things that will last for eternity.
