April 4th- Taking Time

Luke 10:38-42 “Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, ‘Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.’ 41And Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.’”

Each one of us is called to a life of serving.  Jesus modeled it for us and used Himself as the example when He said, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).  But when our serving interferes with our sitting and listening to His word, we are serving too much.  The inability to sit still and the addiction to activity could be a sign of deeper issues.  Jesus got to the root of it in verse 41 when He told Martha, “You are worried and troubled about many things.”  She was covering up her anxiety through “much serving.”  Have you ever heard someone say, “I just have to stay busy?”  Typically, that comes from an individual that is worried and troubled.

Dear friend, take time to sit and listen.  You say, “It’s too painful.”  You will find that you can get past the pain and actually be healed.  There is power and strength in stopping long enough to breathe in a few moments of eternity that can wash away your pain.
