April 3rd- Toothless Snakes

Luke 10:19“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

At the beginning of this chapter, the Lord sent out 70 disciples into villages and towns that He would later visit. They were given authority to announce the kingdom of God and power over demonic spirits. When they return and give their report to Jesus, they exclaim with joy, “even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” That’s part of the kingdom message. You and I do not need to fear the enemy given what Jesus said in our verse today.

But after they announce their spiritual superiority, Jesus redirects their attention in verse 20: “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but  rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” It’s good news that you and I can trample “over all the power of the enemy.” It’s better news that our names are recorded in heaven. While we are here let’s do all we can to put the devil where he belongs: under our feet. The scorpion’s sting and the serpent’s bite are no match for a believer’s foot. Remember, Jesus is talking about demonic spirits. We have the authority of Jesus in our steps. But let us always remember that heaven is our home and our reward. There will be no need to have our feet protected in that heavenly city for no snakes or scorpions will ever be found and there will be no demons to contend with. Until then…walk on.
