Luke 24:45-47 “And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. 46Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”
Today’s passage from the One Year Bible New Testament reading is a post-resurrection appearance of Jesus Christ to two of His disciples (verse 13) as they were traveling on the road to Emmaus.
There are a lot of good things preached from America’s pulpits these days. There’s help for your family, your finances, and your future. I’m wondering though if we’re preaching what Jesus told us to preach in this passage. The only thing He mentions is repentance and remission. While I am certainly not against preaching other things, we better make sure we don’t leave out the essentials. The word remission means freedom, pardon, deliverance, and forgiveness. If we want what Christ offers, we have to repent of our sins. Simple as that.
