October 22 – Gift Time

2 Timothy 1:6,7 –Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Paul calls upon Timothy to rekindle the gift that is in him. Apparently it is dormant and needs to be “fired up” again. How did it get there in the first place? There was a point in time when Paul laid his hands on Timothy and God transmitted, transferred, or commissioned a gift through that experience. This was not the first time that Paul was used by God to do this. Paul had such confidence in the ability to confer spiritual gifts upon others that he said in Romans 1:11 –For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established…” Paul was convinced that something happened to those he ministered to. What can you impart to those around you today?

Our devotion then connects the powerful proclamation that God has not given us a spirit of fear. It could be that this was the reason why the gift was dormant in Timothy’s life. The word fear also means “timid.” God has not given us a spirit of fear or timidity. But He has given us power, love and a sound mind. The phrase “sound mind” means “self-control.”

Today, walk in the power of God. Don’t be timid. Love everyone and give them something God has deposited inside of you. It’s time to rekindle the gift and let it do what God intended for it to do—bless the world around you.
