October 19 – Attitude Check

Jeremiah 33:1-3Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the prison, saying, 2 ‘Thus says the Lord who made it, the Lord who formed it to establish it (the Lord is His name): 3‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’’”

Verse 3 of this passage is one of the most often quoted verses of the Old Testament. It contains such an awesome promise. Think about it…God says that if we will call upon Him He will answer us and show us great and mighty things. These are things that we don’t even know about yet. It reveals to us the power of prayer. Prayer will gain us access to heaven’s resources in a way that we’ve never seen before.

Rather than focus on the promise, I want you to see another extremely important phrase in the reading. It’s found in verse 1: “Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the prison…” This is equally as amazing as the promise itself. Jeremiah received this word while in prison. His frame of mind would have to be right and his spirit proper to be able to receive God’s word. Rather than be bitter about his situation he maintained a great attitude so that he could hear from heaven.

A similar passage is found in today’s reading in chapter 34 verse 1: “While Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army…were fighting against Jerusalem…this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord.” Notice that there is fighting all around Jeremiah and he is still able to hear God’s word.

If there’s one thing today’s reading teaches us it is that we must maintain the right attitude when we are facing difficulty. God wants to speak to us when we’re surrounded by trouble. Call to Him…He just may show you something incredible that you’ve never seen before!
