Galatians 5:13 – “For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”
Today’s reading in Galatians chapter 5 is one of the classics of the New Testament. It contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit (vv.19-23). Paul places the emphasis on living in the Spirit and crucifying the flesh with its passions and desires. He also warns that if we live according to the flesh we will not inherit the kingdom of God (v.21).
One of the contrasts between living according to the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit can be seen in our verse posted above. The flesh is all about self. It is gratifying fleshly desires and passions. The fruit of the Spirit is largely about relationship with others. The fruit of the Spirit serves another person (v.13).
So we have two choices: flesh or Spirit. God has called you to freedom. Choose the Spirit. Experience the joy of serving others.
