Galatians 3:26-29 “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
There’s an identity crisis in our world. People don’t know who they are and are struggling for uniqueness. If you follow the advice of the cultural talking heads of the day they will have you in a complete state of confusion. I’m afraid we are only beginning to see the negative effects of identity confusion.
Paul addresses identity in today’s New Testament One Year Bible reading in our text above from the book of Galatians. Five times he uses the name “Christ.” All identity flows from Him. There are three identity designations from these verses of scripture:
1. Children (sons) of God
2. One in Christ
3. Abraham’s seed
The common distinctions, Jew/Greek, slave/free, male/female, are completely blurred when you become a Christian. Each of these categories has superiority/inferiority built into them. Jesus makes the difference. His blood obscures the lines that try to categorize us and minimize us. The only thing that matters is simply this – do you belong to Jesus?
