August 9 – The Trap

Psalm 31:4 –Free me from the trap that is set for me, for you are my
refuge.” (NIV)

Today’s verse reminds me of a word that I believe God gave me some time ago for someone. It could be meant for someone as well in our One Year Bible Devotion online family. The word was taken from Psalm 124 and it would be good to read the Psalm in its entirety: If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,”

Let Israel now say—
If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,
When men rose up against us,
Then they would have swallowed us alive,
When their wrath was kindled against us;
Then the waters would have overwhelmed us,
The stream would have gone over our soul; Then the swollen waters
Would have gone over our soul.”
Blessed be the Lord,

Who has not given us as prey to their teeth.
Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers;
The snare is broken, and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.”

The Psalm opens with a tremendous thought: “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side.” Wow! God is on our side and as a result we have avoided some terrible misfortunes. But the word that is strong for someone comes from verse 7, “The snare is broken, and we have escaped.” Couple that with today’s reading and you get a fuller picture, “Free me from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge.” The enemy has set a trap for someone. A trap is something hidden and concealed. We are unaware of the impending danger it poses to us and the hurt it can possibly inflict and the loss that can be incurred. It is extremely difficult to free oneself from a trap. Outside help is a must. Thus, David’s prayer for God to set him free. Hear the word of the Lord for you today: the snare is broken, and we have escaped! O, the great love and mercy of God. God will deliver you. God will help you escape.

Has anyone ever been set free from a trap? Please share it as an encouragement to others …
