2 Chronicles 29:3 – “In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he
opened the doors of the house of the Lord and repaired them.”
The verse highlighted above is speaking about King Hezekiah. Chapter 29 opens up with this commentary concerning him: “And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done.” King Hezekiah is one of the greatest kings recorded in Judah’s history. Our verse today gives us a clue as to why that is.
Notice the timing: “In the first year of his reign, in the first month…” today’s politicians in America will typically tell you the first thing they will do when the get elected. It’s the highest priority on their list and it is usually something that is a hot button with voters. The first thing Hezekiah did was not intended to get the attention of voters, but to get the attention of God. He took care of God’s house. He repaired it and opened the doors.
The rest of the chapter tells us how Hezekiah restored temple worship. All of this revealed the heart of a king and the priorities of his life and his administration.
