July 20 – The Place Of Sacrifice

‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬ ‭-Now Solomon began to build the house of the Lord at Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.”

The place where Solomon is to build the house of the Lord is significant. It is called Mount Moriah and has rich biblical history. It is called the place “where the Lord had appeared to his father David.” Parents, take note. Your spiritual experiences are potential building sites for your children. This is why oral testimony is so important. Old Testament parents are encouraged to pass on to their children stories of God’s deliverance and power. This gives the generations to follow a path to walk in and a God to trust.

It is also called “the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor.” David bought the threshing floor from Ornan to stay the judgment of God. He made many sacrifices at this very location.

Genesis 22 (vv.1,2) records another significant event that took place at this location: “Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, ‘Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ Then He said, ‘Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.’” Mount Moriah was also the place that Abraham offered his only son Isaac as a sacrifice. It is here, at Abraham’s greatest place of testing, that his patriarchal position is secured as the “father of us all” (Romans 4:16).

However, as significant as these events are, they are only a foreshadow of the most important event concerning our Christian faith. This is also the same vicinity in which our Lord Jesus Christ was sacrificed as the Savior of the world. Another Father offering His only Son…how fitting that God would choose the same location to perform the very difficult task he once asked of Abraham.

One place…four events…countless sacrifices. Your place of sacrifice today is your children’s place of salvation tomorrow.
