June 7 – Signs And Wonders

Acts 5:12 – And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch.

Our text today is a commentary on the activity of the early church. The ESV adds the word “regularly” so that verse 12 reads, “Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people…” It was a part of church life, church expression, evangelism and preaching and teaching. As a result, verse 14 says that “…believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes…

They did not come without cost to the apostles. They were opposed by the religious leaders. They were put in prison. They were supernaturally released by an angel. They were arrested again, interrogated and beaten and then threatened to not speak in the name of Jesus. So what did they do? Verse 42 tells us, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.”

If we had their boldness and their faith we too would see God’s power in signs and wonders. And that, my friend, would cause us to see a harvest that is mentioned in verse 14 above. No need for gimmicks and gadgets; just the gospel and the message of the Kingdom…
