1 Samuel 30:6b – “…But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.”
While David and his men were away on business the Amalekites had raided their home city of Ziklag, burned it with fire and carried off women and children alive. When David and the men reached Ziklag and realized what happened, the Bible says they lifted up their bodies and wept until there was no more power to weep. Then anger set in. But not against the Amalekites. Their anger was toward their leader, David. Not only was his home attacked by enemies but now he is being attacked by his friends. Rather than cave in, David encourages himself in the Lord. How did he do that! We know David was a psalmist and he knew how to worship God. I believe he turned to what he did best. And it was the turning point for he and his men. God gave David instruction on what to do to recover what the enemy had stolen from him and he was successful in doing so.
When you are by yourself and there is no one around you to encourage you, you need to learn to strengthen and encourage yourself. Remember, your door of discouragement could be your gateway of opportunity. Three words in verse 18 tell the story: “David recovered all.” Strengthen yourself today and recover everything the enemy has stolen from you!
