May 11th – The Principle of Association

1 Samuel 10:10,11 – When they came there to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11And it happened, when all who knew him formerly saw that he indeed prophesied among the prophets, that the people said to one another, “What is this that has come upon the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

This passage chronicles the beginning of Saul’s call to become Israel’s first king. This would be initiated through his contact with the prophet Samuel. We learn that as he departed Samuel’s presence and came to a company of prophets, that the Spirit of God came upon Him and he prophesied among them. We have no record that this ever happened to Saul prior to this experience. Therefore, we can only conclude that this happened as a result of his association with the prophets, upon whom the Spirit of God rested, which caused them to prophesy, thus the term “prophet.” Saul was changed by this experience, which caused the people who knew him formerly to recognize the transformation.

This has tremendous implications for us today. Here is the primary lesson we can take from this reading: you will be transformed by the anointing you associate with. It is vital to understand this principle. It does matter who your companions are. It does matter which church you choose to attend. It does matter what teaching you decide to sit under. Whatever you’re looking for spiritually, and whatever area of Christian life you want to grow in, find a ministry that flows in that anointing and connect with it. You will be changed!
