May 10th – God In The Ordinary

John 6:41,42 – The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” And they said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?

God cradled the heavenly in the earthly. Jesus was so “normal” from the perspective of some that they had a hard time swallowing His claims. He was born in a feeding trough. Nothing spectacular about that. Very humble beginnings for the Son of God. We have no record of the early years of Jesus’ life. Are we to assume they are rather uneventful, rather “normal?” Did He climb trees, play outside, and skin His knees like other little boys? Did He have acne as a teenager and did He have “normal” teenage stuff going on in His life? The missing years leave much to the imagination. But in this and in other passages of the gospels, His hometown acquaintances who knew His family well did not seem to be impressed with Him. And herein lies a principle we do not want to miss: do not allow that which is familiar to prevent you from seeing the miracle of it.

God does some rather spectacular things in scripture. But He also does some spectacular things wrapped in normal routines of life. Whatever you do, don’t miss God at your place of employment today. Don’t miss God at your house today. Don’t miss God on your way to work or on your way home from work or in the grocery store today. You might pass off an angel for just another person (Hebrews 13:2). Expect God to show up in the ordinary things of life today.
