April 8th- Burning Lamps

Luke12:35“Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning.”

This verse introduces a teaching from Jesus on being a watchful servant in light of His return. While the Master is away His servants are to be engaged and busy in the affairs of the Master. Having your waist girded is language in scripture that speaks of preparedness for action. We should be ready to do whatever is asked or required of us in the Lord’s work.

Jesus tells us to keep our lamps burning. This requires oil to fuel the flame. The story of the 5 wise and 5 foolish virgins is a reminder on the necessity to keep our lamps full. Whatever you do, don’t let the light burn out. I’m concerned that too many are not ready and not prepared…for what’s coming on the earth and for Who’s coming…

Later in the chapter there is a rebuke to those who think the Master’s delayed arrival is a time for partying. This attitude results in disaster as the Master shows up unexpectedly and punishes the slothful servant. We must take seriously the charge each of us has been given. Don’t be found naked and unprepared. The Master could show up at any time.
