Today’s Psalm, Psalm 78, opens with the importance of passing on our spiritual heritage to our children. This is critical for three reasons: 1) That they might set their hope in God; 2) That they would not forget the works of God; and 3) That they might keep his commandments (verse 7). Then the psalm proceeds to give testimony as to why Israel messed up and didn’t enter into the Promised Land. There are four specific reasons given. 1) Instability. Verse 8 tells us that the problem was in their hearts and that their spirit was not steadfast with God. In other words, because of the condition of their hearts they had problems being faithful to Him. 2) Short Memory. Verse 11 says that they forgot His works. Then the scriptures tell us the tremendous things He did for them. 3) Challenging God. Verse 19 says that they spoke against God and said, “Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?” 4) Unbelief. Verse 22 says that they believed not in God and did not trust in His salvation.
This is something we should pay close attention to. Today, let’s counteract these negatives that we might obtain God’s promise to us. Let us be loyal and faithful to God. Let’s remember all that He has done for us. Let’s have a conviction that God can do anything and He can turn our present situation completely around if it is undesirable. And let’s choose to believe in God and trust that He can deliver us.
