Psalm 57:4 – “My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.” (KJV)
This psalm was written by David when he was fleeing from Saul. He is being pursued wrongfully and his life is in danger every day. Today’s devotional finds David in a very dangerous place. Have you ever felt that you were among lions? The other verses in this psalm give us great insight as to the posture we need to take when we find ourselves in such a dilemma.
1. Take Refuge. We all need a hiding place. Some find it in drinking or partying. Some try to lose the threat of danger in seeking out relationships. Verse 1 says, “…In the shadow of Your wings will I make my refuge…” There is no place more secure than this. Under the guardianship of the Almighty is the safest place to be.
2. Cry Out. Verse 2 says, “I will cry to God most high; to God that performs all things for me.” David realizes he needs to go the the One who can do something about his situation. Praying to God is the next step when you feel like the prey.
3. Have Faith. I love what David says in verse 3: “He shall send from heaven, and save me…” God will send you help from heaven! There is nothing like supernatural intervention. Your resources are not limited to this earth.
4. Be Fixed. Verse 7 says: “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed…” Don’t let the trouble around you influence you. You must remain committed and determined that nothing is going to move you. Make sure your heart remains established.
5. Keep Praising. When people are pursued and their hearts become discouraged they can lose their praise. DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU! David says in verse 9 – “I will praise You, O Lord, among the people…” Don’t isolate and hide from people. Keep going to church and keep praising God. The enemy would love to disrupt your commitment to God any way he can. But when you’re among lions, let your praise be heard above their roar.
